Dear Heartland / Oral History

Exciting event at Perry County Historical Society!

August 12th, 10:00 a.m.- PCHS has partnered with KRCU out of Cape Girardeau to be a part of their “Dear Heartland” project. There will be a presentation about oral history, how to save your family stories, and participants are invited to take part in the “Dear Heartland” interview. Please see more about this event below. Event will take place in the Higher Education Building, on the 2nd floor, in the Doheny room and Library.

PCHS has long been interested in ways to preserve the memories many people have about life in Perry County & we believe that partnering with KRCU is a great way to do that.

What is “Dear Heartland”?

“Remember sitting around the dinner table as your parents shared their stories about growing up? Remember hearing all of the crazy shenanigans they got into, or simply what life was like back then? Well now it’s your turn and this time we want to hear them too. This is your chance to walk down memory lane and share your stories about life in southeast Missouri. So bring your story, a friend, a family member or just yourself as KRCU embarks on our new community project “Dear Heartland.”” – KRCU

Why are these stories important to PCHS?

Oral histories are a great way to get a snapshot into what life was like. They also help in preserving our stories, anecdotes, and family traditions, that can then be used as a research tool for researchers for years to come.

How will this work day of the event?

KRCU staff members will be present to record stories, while at the same time, Jennifer Schwent, director of the Perry County Historical Society and graduate of the Historic Preservation program at SEMO will be giving a presentation in the Doheny Room about preserving family stories, and the ways in which this is possible. Visitors do not have to participate in the interview to come to the presentation, and it will be ongoing so that interview participants won’t miss any of it when it’s their turn. After the interviews are complete, copies will be given to PCHS.

If you would be interested in having your story documented by KRCU, please comment on this post with your name, phone number, and email.

Please note: There are no assigned times without arrangements being made with PCHS beforehand.
